2011-10-12 : ECC - TED Night

Join us for a night of TED. From Wikipedia: TED (Technology Entertainment and Design) is a global set of conferences owned by the private non-profit Sapling Foundation, formed to disseminate "ideas worth spreading."

Video 1: VS Ramachandran on your mind
Vilayanur Ramachandran tells us what brain damage can reveal about the connection between celebral tissue and the mind, using three startling delusions as examples.

Video 2: Jill Bolte Taylor's stroke of insight
Jill Bolte Taylor got a research opportunity few brain scientists would wish for: She had a massive stroke, and watched as her brain functions -- motion, speech, self-awareness -- shut down one by one. An astonishing story.

Arrive between 7:00 and 7:15 for introductions and to get settled in. We will begin the first video at 7:30. The video is approximately 20 minutes long. After we watch, we'll discuss for approximately 40 minutes. Once we're done with the first video, we'll watch the second video (also approximately 20 minutes long) and discuss (same parameters).

2011-10-13 : EOC - EOC Volunteer Info and Social at Pub 1905

2011-10-15 : COC - Sulphur Springs / Riverview, and CCC Boogeyman MAN
Wow - it feels like it's been a million years since I coordinated an event for COC! Probably because it has been a really long time. That's what living in Edmonton will do to you, I suppose.

It was a great day to be out for an easy autumn hike near Bragg Creek. The weather was great and the fall colours splendiforous. Thanks to all who came out for making it a fun and special day!

Meet in the front lobby area at 7:00. Show starts at 7:30. Look for the coordinator wearing a black and white ECC bandana.

Payment required by noon on August 20th so we can get seats together. I am partial to Cabaret Seating at a table (very front), so that's what I'm planning on getting us. If, by August 20th, that seating is no longer available, I'll get us the best available and give everyone a refund on the overage.
You can e-mail me your payment or send via PayPal to rhonda.scheurer@gmail.com.

2011-10-20 : ECC - Acrylic Painting

Meet in the front entrance of the Alberta Art Gallery at 6:50pm. I will have a leopard print scarf, but you can also take a look at my picture.

You will need to PAY AT THE EVENT.

This is a drop-in adult art class offered by the Art Gallery of Alberta. No experience required and all materials are supplied. The theme for this class is Build: 3-D Painting Get inspired by the glowing forests of local artist Arlene Wasylynchuk and create a 3-D painting of your own. Begin by painting with acrylic on plastic and then stretch, roll and build to create your 3-D painting. Finish by lighting and photographing your work.

This is a great way to try something new or hone es and sponges.an existing skill!
Tonight we learned that sometimes, a vision isn't enough... talent helps. One out a two ain't bad though. We had a lot of fun melting crayons on various types of surfaces, painting, shaping and mounting. You can see some of the artwork on Facebook under the group "AGA Open Studio: Adult Drop-In Workshops"

2011-10-22 : ECC - Weibo's War at Metro Cinema
Wiebo's War tells the story of a Christian community at war with the oil and gas industry. Wiebo Ludwig is the prime suspect in a recent string of pipeline bombings. The bombings echo a campaign of sabotage he waged against the oil and gas industry in the 90s – barricading roads, blowing up wells and culminating in the unsolved death of a sixteen-year-old girl on his family's farm. The Ludwig family lives in northern Alberta, in the heart of Canada's oil patch. They came twenty-five years ago, wanting to live in more closely in accordance with their Christian beliefs, according to Scripture. They built their community in the wilderness with their own hands, not knowing that it lay on top of one of the largest undeveloped fields of natural gas on the continent. Other people take whatever buyout is on offer and make accommodation with the oil and gas industry. Wiebo and his family – after years of trying to deal with the industry, politicians and the media - went to war.

Wiebo Ludwig and filmmakers in attendance for the Sat, Oct 22 7pm screening.
