Club Events 2011

2011-11-20 : ANDWA - Potluck Brunch at R&B&Ss; Calgary Pad

2011-11-23 : ECC - Wil at Royal Alberta Museum
Join us to see Wil at the Royal Alberta Museum. Wil's web site is www.ibreakstrings.com.

Wil’s third release, and first since parting ways with EMI, In This Together, is an album of personal stories connecting life, love and Wil’s on-going relationship with music. After more then 10 years of touring, Wil has returned to some of the core themes that brought his debut album, Both Hands, into being. He is, however, taking a definite step forward in his growth as a songwriter, singer and musician. Transitioning from the darker imagery and tones of his second album, By December, Wil has found in his third album, a lighter stride.

You can buy your ticket ahead of time at yeglive.ca or take your chances that there will be tickets available at the door.

2011-11-25 : ECC - Legendary Downchild Blues Band at Festival Place
See Legendary Downchild Blues Band at Festival Place.

Meet in the front lobby area at 7:00. Show starts at 7:30. Look for the coordinator wearing a black and white ECC bandana.

Payment required by noon on September 12th so we can get seats together. I am partial to Cabaret Seating at a table (very front), so that's what I'm planning on getting us. If, by September 12th, that seating is no longer available, I'll get us the best available and give everyone a refund on the overage.
You can e-mail me your payment or send via PayPal to rhonda.scheurer@gmail.com.

EOC - Terwillegar Park Training Explorer

2011-12-03 : ANDWA - Moraine Lake Road - slow pace

2011-12-07 : ECC - TED Night

Join us for a night of TED. From Wikipedia: TED (Technology Entertainment and Design) is a global set of conferences owned by the private non-profit Sapling Foundation, formed to disseminate "ideas worth spreading."

Video 1: Alice Dreger: Is anatomy destiny?
Alice Dreger works with people at the edge of anatomy, such as conjoined twins and intersexed people. In her observation, it's often a fuzzy line between male and female, among other anatomical distinctions. Which brings up a huge question: Why do we let our anatomy determine our fate?

Video 2: Elliot Krane: The mystery of chronic pain
We think of pain as a symptom, but there are cases where the nervous system develops feedback loops and pain becomes a terrifying disease in itself. Starting with the story of a girl whose sprained wrist turned into a nightmare, Elliot Krane talks about the complex mystery of chronic pain, and reviews the facts we're just learning about how it works and how to treat it.

Arrive between 7:00 and 7:15 for introductions and to get settled in. We will begin the first video at 7:30. The video is approximately 20 minutes long. After we watch, we'll discuss for approximately 40 minutes (it'll depend on how much we want to discuss... it could be considerably less, but we'll cap it at no more than 60 minutes) Once we're done with the first video, we'll watch the second video (also approximately 20 minutes long) and discuss (same parameters).

Our home is small and humble... be prepared to get cozy... some of us will probably end up sitting on the floor.

2011-12-10 : ANDWA - Beginner Snow Shoe - Hogarth Lakes

2011-12-11 : ANDWA - Denny's at McKnight and Edm Trail

2011-12-14 : EOC - Hawrelak Park: Similar terrain, different route!

2011-12-17 : EOC - Backpack Terrain Obstacle Course Training Conditioning Adventure
With the mild winter we're having (so far), there wasn't much snow in the park to provide resistance... but we headed out anyway and made do with what we found. The fields in a lot of cases did provide quite a bit of resistance so we got a good workout tromping about. We then did some bushwhacking through the woods, which, although it was plenty fun, was not really that comparable to climbing the ROUSs on the West Coast Trail. Amulya feared we were lost for a bit, but when the threat of being eaten reared its head, he wisely calmed down and we easily found our way out of the bush.

A few people took their leave of the group, but most of us headed to the playground for the third bit of training - the playground (training for the ladders). We were having a tremendous amount of fun - this particular playground really is perfect for WCT training and we will be back, however, the day ended abruptly with an injury when Sri fell and injured her arm almost immediately after declaring how much fun she was having. BUMMER!! Get better soon, Sri, so we can see you back out on the trail.

For future WCT training events I probably would do things a little differently. The playground is great training for both the ladders and the ROUSs, so I'll probably skip the bushwhacking and focus on the playground... but hopefully no more injuries. Be careful out there folks...
