Club Events 2011

2011-07-21 : ECC - Edmonton Restaurant Tour: Rendezvous
Join us for dinner at Rendezvous Ethiopian.

Enjoy a traditional Ethiopian meal, eaten with your hands, and served up in the form of a stew containing lots of exotic spices. Each meal is accompanied by soft injera bread.

Ethiopian cuisine is unique by way of ceremony, flavour, colour and presentation. Wot, the national dish, comes in many varieties-meat, fish, poultry or vegetable of hot pepper and spice stew which are almost always accompanied by a fermented form of unleavened bread called Injera. Layers of the bread are geometrically positioned in Mesob, or basket table, and spoonfuls of the different types of the different types of Wot are then attractively portioned out on the top of them. Then it's finger time, tearing off a piece of Injera and wrapping it around a chosen piece of meat with savoury sauce.

For those not accustomed to such hot food whose ingredients include red and black pepper, cardamon, garlic and coriander, there is an alternative: Alicha is equally delicious but a lot milder and is usually made from chicken or lamb flavoured with green pepper and onion.

How to:

Note that ECC policy is to add 23% to the bill to cover 5% GST plus 18% gratuity. We try to get separate bills whenever we can, but that is usually not possible. The coordinator will calculate everyone's total based on what they ordered plus the 23%. If you disagree with this policy, please do not register for this event.
Rendezvous has been renamed Abyssinia. Same place, same cuisine, same great service from a new owner... larger portions! Yay for larger portions! And the proprietor makes the injera fresh from scratch. SO yummy! Thanks to everyone who came out. :)

2011-07-27 : EOC - Easy/Beginner Roller Blade
It was a perfect evening for roller blading, and Neil was a great tour guide. He roller blades a LOT so he knows all the places to go. We started off on the path near Foote Field but then went out and rode a bunch of neighborhood streets including past a really cool little park, which Neil and Jocelyn skated through while the rest of us rested on some rocks.

Looping back to our starting point, we did a total of 6km.

Thanks to all who came out - it was a fantastic time!

2011-07-30 : EOC - Easy-Intermediate Mountain Bike - Goldbar/Hermitage
It was a fabulous Sunny Saturday! Thirteen people cycled 23 kilometers in our glorious river valley. The light wind kept the mosquitoes at bay. We cycled on a mix of paved & gravel trails with some mud just for sport (& falling). The pace was pretty quick & some of the hills were killers.I think that most of us would do it again soon.

2011-08-04 : EOC - Mayfair Golf Course, MacKenzie Ravine Half-And-Half
It was a great night for a walk... until the mosquitoes arrived! Hoards and hoards and clouds and clouds of them! After the first half, most of our group decided to bail, so the rest of us followed suit. Some went to the Urban Diner for snacks, which was great.

Thanks to all who came out - hope to see you again soon.

2011-08-08 : EOC - Lovely River - Bikes and Bridges
It was a great evening for a bike ride... even a bike ride with hills. Brent's Bikes and Bridges route was awesome. We all had a great time, except for Michel who had to leave early with a pedal issue, and Glen at the end who had a bike rim that decided to eat all the tubes it could get its teeth on.

A few of us finished up the evening with refreshments on the patio at Brewsters.

Thanks to all who came out!

2011-08-10 : ECC - Durian in the Park

You've heard of durians (or maybe you haven't?), and here's your big chance to try one without bringing it into your home (oy the smell!) or paying the frightfully high cost of buying a whole one of your own (they run up to $50/ea at T&T).

Join us in the park to try the stinkiest fruit known to mankind. The unusual flavour and odor of the fruit have prompted many people to express diverse and passionate views ranging from deep appreciation to intense disgust. The odor has led to the fruit's banishment from certain hotels and public transportation in southeast Asia. Food writer, Richard Sterling says "its odor is best described as pig-shit, turpentine and onions, garnished with a gym sock". More information on Wikipedia.

In summer of 2009, Brent and Rhonda bought and tried a durian, chronicled in this fabulous video: Rhonda & Brent Eat a Durian. In summer of 2010, we bought a couple of them and hoodwinked our friends into coming over and trying it out with us (see photo above). Afterwards, we put what was left into the composter, and our neighbor ended up calling the gas company thinking they had a gas leak. This year, we would like to share the experience with you... if you think you're brave enough! The taste is much better than the smell... in fact, after her second try, Rhonda developed quite a taste for them and now loves them (Brent... not so much).

Bring your own beverage, and a snack to share. Anything mundane and edible welcome, but something more interesting and exotic to make our experience even that much more enjoyable would be great too.

OPTIONAL: If you would like your own "Durian in the Park" t-shirt (and who wouldn't?), please e-mail Rhonda to order. Cost is $30 (for t-shirt and printing), and I'll need to know your size. I'll have them made before the event to hand out at the event.

NOTE that our t-shirt order has already been placed for this year but you can STILL get one if you want by going to the Events section of our online store!

"Durian in the Park" turned into "Durian in the Condo" because of the conditions, but we had a great time! My apologies to Paul, who has a very keen sense of smell and nearly died of the experience. Everyone(who had never tried it before) at least tried a little bit, which made the event a tremendous success. But they didn't try TOO much which means I have lots left over and even MORE of a success.

Thanks to all who came out. What a fun time!

2011-08-12 : EOC - Perseids Meteor Shower
It was a beautiful evening, and with the help of my trusty iPhone, I counted 27 meteors until I left at 1:45.

We headed in on the boardwalks, and eventually settled on two of the viewing platforms, splitting the group in half. The half on the one platform left at about 12:30, and the rest of us stayed until 1:45.

When we first headed out there was quite a bit of cloud cover, which I found disappointing. Of course, there was also the promised full moon, which was definitely a meteor spoiler. But, as like the other two times I've done this, we saw lots of meteors between 10:00 and 11:30 and not as many after that. I think part of it was that cloud cover earlier in the evening. It helped keep the glow of the moon down and we saw lots of great meteors - some of them great bright streaks across the sky. As the cloud cover cleared off, we thought that would help, but all it did was increase the glow from the spoiler moon. It was so bright you could almost read a book by it. It was absolutely beautiful, but it put a real damper on meteor viewing.

Thanks to everyone who came out – it was a wonderful event.
