Trip Log

Notes Actions
Bright and early, Kevin, Jacqueline and I set out in the Fozz-Meister (aka Fozzie, aka my Ford Festiva). Our constant chatter became a reverent silence (punctuated only by the occasional “oooooh” and “aaaaahhhhhhh”) once we turned north onto the Icefields Parkway with the eye-popping mountains and spectacular blue sky.

Wilcox Pass is a great little hike up through light forest which opens up quickly into scrubby parkland. Past the roaring stream we found oodles of bighorn sheep with REALLY BIG HORNS (coincidence? I think not…). A bit more elevation gain and we made it into the meadows of Wilcox Pass.

We trekked further into the pass, for a total of about 5.5km in, where we learned and practiced many new skills, including runoff stream fording, snowbank traverseing, marsh hopping, tundra whacking and runoff-stream-fording-and-snowbank-traverseing-and-marsh-hopping-while-tundra-whacking. Once we reached the food court (aka the picnic table and public washroom, aka a few rocks and a little bump of a hill that obscured the lunchers’ view while essential business was conducted), we stopped for lunch where some candid photos were snapped of Kevin and I while we ate (grrrrreat… can’t WAIT to see those ones….).

Returning the way we came, we encountered no more sheep, but plenty of chubby gophers and a few humans in search of the sheep. Back down the Icefields Parkway with more reverent silence (punctuated only by the occasional snore… thankfully NOT from the driver), and approaching Lake Louise, Kevin and Jacqueline were overcome with joy to listen to my Disco CD at ¾ volume which was required to stave off the highway hypnosis that was setting in.

PS… Thanks to Jak and Kevin for taking pictures today, since somebody (use process of elimination) forgot her camera and GPS at home...
