An absolutely spectacular day today! My group of 11 set out 30 minutes ahead of Joel’s group of 11. We quickly discovered that it was a bit early in the season to do Rae Glacier, as there was still a LOT of snow (and muck) on the ground, although last year, we did the same hike on June 17th, and there was hardly any snow left on the ground (see last year’s version of the event).

In any case, we hiked up to the pretty lake, and then beyond, where we encountered the serious snow where we had the fun of route finding through snow, muck and forest. The second group had it SO much easier because all they had to do was follow our footsteps through the snow (although they didn't actually know whether it was OUR footsteps they were following). Past the lake, we gained some more elevation, and made a final trek across a long patch of snow where Jennifer and I managed to fall into a deep footstep never to be seen again (just kidding… obviously we were rescued, or how could I be writing this).

Before we even reached the glacier, Joel’s group started catching up with us (we'll chalk that up to Ray's competitive streak). We all made it up to the glacier at about the same time, and sat down to lunch. Several of us tried out the crazy carpets on the glacier (thanks to Emanuele from last year’s event for tipping us off to THAT idea!), and we sat around waiting forEVER for the snowboarders to climb up the glacier and give us a show as they boarded back down again.

Back down we came, satisfied with the great day’s hike. A bunch of us headed in to Kilkenny (where else), where we rendezvoused with Gen and Merv from Jerry’s ‘Ha Ling Peak’ event today. We were also joined by Alan who mountain biked by himself today but decided to grace us with his presence for beers at least.
