Rock Paper Scissors Championships 2007

So the Legend goes as follows: One day, a certain volunteer by the name of Jenn M posted in the TOC forum an event that was happening locally, something that would have brought a little chuckle to the rest of the forum dwellers. The link took us to a site advertising the upcoming Rock Paper Scissors World Championships being held in Toronto that year. Rhonda, the beloved creator of the sacred Outdoor Club website and Albertan (don’t hold it against her) was dared to fly to Toronto to cheer Jenn on if she (Jenn) competed in the Championships. Little did Jenn know that Rhonda was going to seriously take her up on the offer, and the rest is history (that you can find Here.).

Rhonda and the rest of us had waaaaaaay too much fun at the Championships that we immediately agreed o do again this year, and this time, we would be better organized and ready for the debauchery that masks itself as the RPS Championships! We assembled a Team of players, 3 from Calgary, Maureen, Joel and Rhonda, and 2 from Toronto, Jenn P and Jason. We created T-shirts for team ‘Runs with Scissors’ and also made some for the groupies there to support us!

We were a lean mean, fighting machine, decked out in the finest looking T-shirts this side of 49th parallel! We studied our Gambits and mastered our strategies! A quick team huddle and we were set to take on the world! And yes, the World is represented quite well at these tournaments, last year’s champion was a Brit, and this year he was dressup as a British Admiral. Other colourful characters included a Hulk Hogan wannabe, A Giant Rat that said he was really a bunny with a rat tail sticking out of his mouth, various Elvis impersonators, Gladiators, Knights, Bukkake Girls, and the venerable Captain Morgan himself!
Silver Creek and Scotsdale Farm - welcoming members of the COC

The day started off at a chilly 11 degrees with a 30% chance of rain. But we still started off with some good positive energies as this was not cold enough to deter our Calagarian visitors Joel and Rhonda, someone even noted that a 30% chance of rain only means a 70% chance of no rain. And it was also great to welcome our new member Edwine to her first TOC event! And even as both event coordinators admittedly had ever been to nor done this hike, the day started off with everyone having a good 'glass half full' attitude. Thus none of our car pools got lost on the way to our Scottsdale Farm meeting spot ... even with one missed turn and a long wait at a rail road crossing. Our hike began on an easy yet steady pace as we went through the Scottsdale farm woods and cow pastures. While it seemed that that the full fall foliage colours were not yet at its full display, the fallen leaves on the paths and ground were quite striking and colourful. The trails started of easy enough and then later provided some moderate challenges as the terrain made consistent and sometimes dramatic scenic changes. Starting with country roads & pastures, we moved on to some slightly steep hillsides, got into a few rocky stretches, some dense hillside grasslands, some meadows, a few wet lands that required the crossing a few plank bridges & walkways and a quiet flowing creek surrounded by fresh fallen red & orange leaves. During the hike, we enjoyed hearing about the history of the other Outdoor Clubs from Rhonda and also learning about the kinds of events that the COC provides to its members. They also gave us some encouragement as wells as ideas for other kinds of events that we can run here in Toronto. All in all we completed 9 of the 14 kilometres of the entire trail with a quick lunch stop in a nice steady pace finishing the main loop trail in about 3 or so hours. Then it was back to the city to begin getting ready for the World Rock Paper Scissors Championship.
