2007-01-03 : COC - Ski from Peter Lougheed Info Center (Slow/Moderate Pace)
What a fantastic day!! This was my tenth-ever x-c ski trip (and I'm not a downhill skier, so pretty much my tenth-ever ski, period). It was my first trip under my new label of "novice/intermediate" (instead of "beginner/flailer") and it was awesome. We set out from the Info Center along the wonderfully groomed and trackset Meadow, stayed right to stay on Meadow and then at Elkwood Parking got onto Wheeler trail which was not groomed or track-set. Wheeler felt great - the soft snow under the feet instead of the rigid trackset, but it was a lot more work, too, so when we returned the same way we went out, I was pretty happy to see Meadow's perfect tracks. We only did about 11 km today because of the extra work involved with doing Wheeler, but I'm still happy with the distance and thoroughly enjoyed the trip. It was fantastic to finally share an event with Sibel again, and I must admit, a huge thrill to finally meet the great Kheang (who's just as awesome as everyone says he is).

2007-01-05 : CCC - Music Appreciation Night - MAKE-OUT MUSIC Theme
Arrive at 7PM for introductions and to get settled in. We'll start the music selections at 7:30. We will have two CDs. We will have a round-robin to introduce our songs first. The music will be “mixed” according to my opinion of how it flows best – your songs will not necessarily all be together on the CDs. We will listen during the music, taking a break for visiting, potty breaks and snack refills in between the two CDs.

My apartment is small, and the atmosphere casual. We'll be sitting or laying around the living room while we listen. Bring a pillow or cushion if you like for maximum comfiness.

Everyone must contribute 8-12 minutes of music for the evening. If the evening has a “theme” (listed in the title), you should (but don’t have to) bring music that fits your interpretation of the theme. Many of our themes are DELIBERATELY ambiguous for maximum creativity!

2007-01-06 : COC - Back Side of Blueberry Hill
This trip to Blueberry wasn't as perfect as last time I went, but it was still pretty good. The snow conditions were absolutely beautiful, it was a great day, and the snow-covered-tree-wonderland that I remembered was still there in its glory. However, it was overcast and my already meagre sense of direction was challenged even further by the lack of a hanging sun. Unlike Marko's group who took the much nicer route starting off up the Hydroline cut (which is what I'll be doing from now on), we started off going up between the track-set x-c ski trail of West Elk Pass. At the top of the hill, we overshot Marko's entry trail into the trees (which was too soon according to my instincts) and headed out into the trees a bit further in. I had a good sense for where my hill was, but I did get hopelessly turned around a couple of times, especially the one time that we went up a mystery hill into an alternate universe where directions made absolutely no sense and we actually suspected that Marty's compass was crazy (when really it was just me).

Re-tracing our steps back out to one of our points of reference, we tried again and this time we stumbled onto the trail created by Marko's group. We followed this trail for the rest of the day, although it is not the trail I would have preferred. The trail I've done up Blueberry before is about 1/2km south of Marko's trail that we followed up. Marko's ended up being a bit steeper than my usual one, which is already steep enough near the top of the hill. We made it quite a bit of the way up the steep trail, but then storm and daylight concerns as well as some equipment problems turned us back a bit early.

We had our lunch break before starting the significant climbing part of the day where Marty and Brian decided to check out a couple of spruce traps for the amusement of the rest of us.

Definitely a trip to do over and over again... one day we'll get it just right, but I hope that day doesn't come too soon because then perhaps some of the appeal will be lost.

2007-01-09 : COC - Johnston Canyon
Johnston is certainly not the world's most challenging hike, but it is spectacularly beautiful... especially on a winter weekday, with fresh snow falling and hardly anyone else on the trail. We got a lot of new snow, enough that the several cms we walked through on the way up was completely covered by several new cms on the way out. Absolutely beautiful - check out the photos.

Happy birthday hike, Jim.

2007-01-14 : COC - Kananaskis Village
When you combine a beautiful sunny day, great snow and a great bunch of people you get the perfect combination for a fun X country skiing day! We started at the Kananaskis parking lot, took Terrace Trail onto Kovach (with the long uphill and then nice downhill) and then back up the Aspen Trail to finally come back on Terrace Trail. All together about 8 Km in about 2 hours. It was warm enough to eat lunch outside so we did that before heading to the pub for a beer. All around a great day and we even got to sleep-in and get home for dinner.

2007-01-15 : CCC - Jonestown: The Life and Death of Peoples Temple
Show time is 7:00 pm. We'll meet inside the theatre in the downstairs waiting room, after you purchase your ticket. Please be on time - coordinator and group will wait only 15 minutes before entering the theatre to choose seats. The coordinator (Laura) will be wearing a red rose. Thanks!

Event: Jonestown: The Life and Death of Peoples Temple

USA, 2006
85 minutes

On November 18, 1978, over 900 members of Peoples Temple died in the largest mass suicide/murder in history. What drew so many people across racial and class lines to the Peoples Temple? How could a diverse group of 900 people be convinced to commit suicide? What was a California congregation doing in the jungles of Guyana? And who was Jim Jones to command such loyalty that parents would murder their own children? Using never before seen archival footage and survivor interviews, 'Jonestown: The Life and Death of Peoples Temple' tells the story of the people who followed Jim Jones from Indiana, to California, and finally to the remote jungles of Guyana, South America, in a misbegotten quest to build an ideal society.

This film has been placed on the short list for possible
Academy Award nomination for feature documentary. There will be a postscreening phone interview with the director.

This is an offering under the Movies that Matter program: http://www.moviesthatmatter.org/

Nineteen CCC members attended this sold out movie. The filmaker presented the information on Jim Jones through archival footage and first hand accounts of People's Temple members. He purposefully had no narrator so the viewer is left to draw their own conclusions. There was a Q&A phone call to the director at the end, that I found was worth staying for. We learned some information that could not be included in his 90 minute movie, but which is included on the DVD to be released in April. Most interesting was some of the stories of the survivors. 2007-01-16 : CCC - Music Appreciation Night - DEAD GUYS Theme
Arrive at 6:30PM for introductions and to get settled in. We'll start the music selections at 7:00 (sorry, but to avoid interruption if you are later than 7:00, the door buzzer will be shut off and you won't be able to get in). We should have one CD of approximately 80 minutes of music (8 people times ten minutes of music). We will have a round-robin in which the first person will introduce their music, and then we’ll listen. After a short break, we’ll continue with the next person, and so on.

My apartment is small, and the atmosphere casual. We'll be sitting or laying around the living room while we listen. Bring a pillow or cushion if you like for maximum comfiness.

Everyone must contribute 6-10 minutes of music for the evening. If the evening has a “theme” (listed in the title), you should (but don’t have to) bring music that fits your interpretation of the theme. Many of our themes are DELIBERATELY ambiguous for maximum creativity!
