At long last we got some brilliant blue skies today befitting of the Alberta summer. It was a beautiful and warm day – perfect for hiking.

Wind Ridge is approximately 750m of gain over approximately 7.5km… problem is, most of it is right at the very end. By the time we’d hiked in about 4km, we’d only gained about 2½m of elevation. Then, the trail started getting steeper… and steeper… and steeper yet.

Due to a severe case of Acrophobia, one hiker had to turn back early, with her understanding pal in tow. Not too long after, the fainter of heart on the trip declared the 6.5km/550m gain point as the “summit” where they relaxed and enjoyed their lunch in blissful denial of their lack of reaching the true summit.

The ten true adventurers continued on up… and up… and up… some reaching the top by climbing the rock face, and three explorers choosing the bushwhacking “go around the side of the rock face” extended route, which, we will take their word for it, was a lovely diversion with excellent views.

Rendezvousing back at the cars, we realized that we were one hiker short, and were just about to send out the search dogs, when the previously “nice sane guy” Marcel re-joined the group from the other direction with a wild and haunted expression. We haven’t yet discovered what happened to him, but alien abduction has not been ruled out. Since the club is unable to spring for counselling, we are requesting donations be dropped in the form of large cash bills in the COC name at Kilkenny Pub until we’re able to come up with enough for some proper care… or at least a straight-jacket that we can put him in for a photo shoot.
