The 'fabulous five' (Rhonda, Wood, Mark, Holly and Jacqueline) decided to go to B.C. for a wonderful, long day of hiking in Yoho National Park. The day started with a lot of low cloud in the mountain valleys which provided some remarkable photo ops and the group stopped many times to capitalize on these fleeting windows revealing sunlit peaks here and there.

The first hike to the lower Mt. Hunter lookout was a steady climb (485 m vertical gain over 3.6 km) with many scenic viewpoints to stop and take a breather before carrying on to a the lookout where the group enjoyed a leisurely lunch at the fire lookout tower/cabin site. Eager to take in the Hoodoo Creek hike as well, the group chose not to carry on to the upper lookout and headed off to the hoodoos. This trail was a very challenging 365 m gain over an alleged distance of 1.6 km but was more than worth the effort with some spectacular 'sculptures' which yielded countless opportunities for photos from every angle. The trail was steep but very well maintained and in top shape on this very mild and dry day of hiking.

Once again, the Calypso Orchids were out in abundance along with many other wildflowers. This awesome day of communing with nature took us out to Emerald Lake for a quick reconnoiter before heading back. Lively banter and high-spirited repartee characterized the ride back to Calgary in an effort to arrive before dark.

Overall, a wonderful trip and all the hikes and Emerald Lake are heartily recommended and certainly merit a return visit!
