OUR TRADITIONS, presented by Enbridge EPCOR CENTRE's Jack Singer Concert Hall (120 Minutes)

Traditional West Coast Mask Dance Troupe from Hazelton BC.

'Ksan Performing Arts Group are cultural ambassadors for the Gitxsan people. They have performed throughout the province, across Canada, and around the world demonstrating through traditional song and dance the richness of our culture.

'Ksan, the Gitxsan name for the Skeena River ("River of Mist"), is a Treasure House Museum & Historical Village standing where the village of Gitanmaax existed for centuries. The European way did not infringe there as early as in most of North America; a virtually unbroken lifeline to the ancestors has been lovingly maintained. The troupe was created in the late sixties, with the intention of preserving and truthfully portraying the stature, richness, and sophistications of Gitxsan society and culture.

EXHIBITION: WHEN WE ARE ONE

Traditional Gitxsan mask figures & objets d'art pose questions of faith, spirituality & post-contact life in juxtaposition to photos of the Tshimphsian village of Hartley Bay. Fine examples of Gitxsan art are for sale at Carbon Media in January. Masks and regalia courtesy of 'Ksan Performing Arts, a Gitxsan dance troupe from Hazelton, BC. Photos by Sean Dennie were created as part of "The Legend of Hartley Bay", a Big Sky/CAOS project under diretion of Tsimphsian carver Victor Reece. Sean Dennie is a freelance photographer based in Calgary.
