2011-04-25 : EOC - Whitemud Park Slow-Paced Exploratory Hike
This morning it was down to just the three of us - Deborah and Brent and I... but we all wanted to go, so away we went. It was a fantastic spring day - FINALLY!

We walked from Whitemud Park to Whitemud Ravine and on to Rainbow Valley Park. We passed Snow Valley and under the Whitemud, continuing south following the creek to a lovely lookout over an elbow in the creek where we had our snack and then returned the way we'd come.

Thanks, Deborah and Brent, for still being game, and getting me out on the wonderful day!

2011-05-01 : Multiple Events
EOC - Edmonton River Valley Cleanup

The weather was warm and sunny on Sunday morning, as a team of EOC members joined an army of volunteers who set out to clean up the river valley. Our group took on Government House Park (north side of the river, immediately west of Groat Rd.), where we removed cigarette butts, bottle caps and other assorted river. Thankfully, none of us found anything completely disturbing, although a bicycle and a single rollerblade were also removed during our clean-up.

Thanks all for coming out!

ECC - American - The Bill Hicks Story at the Citadel

Three years in the making, American: The Bill Hicks Story brings the tale of one of modern culture’s most iconic heroes to the big screen. Much more than a comedian, Bill Hicks was and still is an inspiration to millions. His timeless comedy tackled the contradictions of America and modern life head on. But his unique gift was to tease apart the essence of religion, the dangers of unbridled government power and the double standards inherent in much of modern society, using nothing but his hilarious ideas and the uncompromising observational style that continues to resonate with successive generations. Like many who have a strong sense of their place in history, Hicks left a large unseen legacy; his collection of video recordings and hundreds of photographs became the starting point for this feature-length animated documentary. These raw materials were put together to recreate a full sense of Bill’s life, ambitions and achievements and a lasting testament as to why he will remain one of the enduring cultural cornerstones of our age.

Meet near the box office between 6:30 and 6:45. I will be holding an ECC sign. Film starts at 7:00.

This film was really well done, and done in an interesting style. They wove three-dimensional-ish-ized still photos, old video footage, and current commentary from Bill Hicks' friends and family to tell the story of his life. And what an interesting life it was, too. I'd never heard of the guy before - I chose the film just based on a little flyer I was given at Yuk Yuks a couple weeks ago. Now I wish I'd known more about him earlier and I wish he were still around - he seems to have been a brilliant, thinking comic. My favorite kind.

Thanks very much to Brent, Mark, Ian and Sharon for joining me for the ECC's first event. I'm excited about having a new club again, and I'm excited about the things I'll see and do that I might not have otherwise, and the people I'll meet who I might not have otherwise.

2011-05-05 : EOC - Roadside Bike Repair 100.5
Five brave souls came out to have a go at the secret workings of roadside bike repair..... Okay, maybe that's a bit dramatic. I'd like to thank everyone who came out May 5th. I hope you had a good time and learned at least one thing that you can use and that makes your cycling easier and more enjoyable. I will accept any suggestions or critisisms regarding future events that you care to make. I'd like to welcome Heather to the club, this being her first event. And I'd like to welcome Doug back to the club, this being his first successful event in a few years. I hope to see you both in the future.

2011-05-07 : ANDWA - Hang out in Calgary

2011-05-08 : ANDWA - Legendary Ed's 89th Birthday Brunch at Lynn's

2011-05-11 : EOC - Aspen Gardens - Whitemud Park Slow-Paced Half-And-Half
Despite gale-force winds this week, 13 brave walkers showed up for the first-ever half-and-half walk. Down at the walking trails, the wind was but a breeze - not enough to be annoying, but enough to hold the mosquitoes at bay. Yay!!
The thirteen of us (plus two pooches) enjoyed a leisurely stroll south from Snow Valley, then returned to the cars where seven bid farewell and the six remaining continued on for the second half, heading north towards Whitemud Park.
It was a very lovely evening - thanks to all who came out!

2011-05-13 : EOC - Lovely River Valley Cycle - Rail Line (Max. 16 KPH)
As I hoped, I got by with a little help from my friends. As this was my first Lovely River Valley Ride sans Brent, I relied heavily on attendees who were more familiar with the pathways than I am. Serge and Michel helped with route-finding and Michel helped with leading the way while I "swept" as is my usual preference. Thankfully, we received a bit of a respite from the howling winds that have been hammering us all week.

Thanks to all who came out - it was a fabulous evening and a great group!

2011-05-14 : ECC - Keeping Peace at Living Room Playhouse
See Keeping Peace at Living Room Playhouse.

Canadians are proud of their position as peacekeepers around the world; it's seen as a noble, necessary duty. However, the exact details of these duties are not often considered, not to mention the effect that "keeping the peace" has on the minds and lives of the peacekeepers. Written and directed by Jon Lachlan Stewart, Keeping Peace explores what it feels like to be plunked smack-dab into a situation of intense tension and aggression, stuck between opposing forces on the verge of outright war. The protagonist, a Canadian peacekeeper named Clint (Ryland Alexander), attempts to reconcile the ghosts from his past and his drive to help people with the reality of his powerlessness.
Going to see this play was a last-minute idea (I didn't hear about it until just a couple days before). I am SO glad we went to see it!

Ryland Alexander, Candace Berlinguette and Ben Wheelwright were all amazing - not a weak one in the bunch. Their set was incredibly simple with just some strips of cloth and a couple of boxes.

The story was told with lots of quick images and changes in scenario, snapshot thoughts and emotions, full action (in a very tight space), with each of the three actors slipping in and out of various characters. I've seen people play multiple characters before, but this was the first time I've seen multiple actors crossing over and sometimes, briefly, playing characters normally played by another. Absolutely fantastic.

Thanks to the Livingroom Playhouse, the actors, the director, and anyone else who contributed to making this a fantastic show. And, of course, thanks to Carol for coming with me on such short notice! :)

2011-05-15 : EOC - IMAX Movie: Born To Be Wild
Thanks to everyone who came along - it was a nice movie with many wonderful elephants and orangutans as the stars, although great credit must go to the humans too, for their dedication in caring for the orphaned animals. I especially enjoyed the scene with the elephants playing soccer - it reminded me of watching professional soccer in Scotland many years back.....
