2011-01-01 : COC - Nose Hill - easy, slow pace xc ski
Upon arrival conditions at Nose Hill looked packed and bare in spots. Some passing snowshoers indicated they saw good ski tracks further along but we felt apprehensive at the possibility of picking up grass and leaves and perhaps even running over rocks and such. So, a quick switch of plans and we headed over to Confederation Golf Course where we found wonderful conditions! A lot of people were skiing there today but with tracks criss-crossing all over the place there was plenty of room for everyone without running into each other. This is an awesome place for 2-3 hours of urban skiing when we've got fresh snow.

2011-01-06 : EOC - Lovely River Valley Cycle with Studded Tires and Headlamps
Wow! Riding a bike through mushy snow and on ice is a lot of work! Five of us took a "leisurely" ride along the pathway, following the river along the north side most of the way, then crossed the ped bridge near the Edmonton Queen and stopped short of climbing the hill into Forest Heights. We returned the same way. A little over 14km round trip. We saw a few other bicycle fanatics on the trail, and I was both impressed and dismayed at how quickly they just blew right past me as I was working full-out to maintain a speed of 11km/hour.

Thanks to all who came out - it was an awesome time!

2011-01-09 : EOC - Heavy Snowfall Celebration - Beginner/Easy Snowshoe at Terwillegar
I called this event a Heavy Snowfall Celebration because of the enormous dump of snow we got this weekend, and celebrate we did! Amazing snow, right in the city! Yay!

Thinking this would be a great opportunity for folks to try out snow shoeing, in the city, but with more mountain-like conditions, we set out. We stayed on some trail for a while, and then I challenged Larry to break trail cross-country for a while. I forgot to tell him that normally, you break trail for about 50-100 paces and then drop to the back so someone else can break trail for a while. Oops.

About 2/3 of the way through our trip, Jason discovered a perfect training hill, so we stopped for a few minutes and tried out descending and ascending the hill with the deep, powdery snow. Some made out better than others, but all had a great time!

Continuing on around the loop of Terwillegar Park, some of us partook of yet another fabulous training hill, while the others watched on. We then bee-lined it back to the cars after a three-hour outing.

Thanks to all who came out - we had a great time!!
