Trip Log

Notes Actions
This was my first Meteor Shower in my life, and it was absolutely AMAZING.

We hiked up Prairie Mountain in the evening, strategically placing several glow sticks along the trail to help with navigating down in the event that someone wanted to leave early. It was hot hiking up, and we arrived at the top just as it was starting to get uncomfortably dark (for hiking). When we got to the top, out of the trees, the wind and cold didn't waste any time setting in, and we didn't waste any time adding layers and getting out our blankets and sleeping bags. Note that Brian made good and sure that EVERYONE knew that it was his 35th birthday and we were to treat him real special (at least until midnight, when we quickly reverted to normal).

Almost immediately (around 10:30 or so), the meteors started, and the sky was punctuated with various types of shooting stars: drunk ones that wobbled all over, fast ones that zipped across and died quickly, and big fluffy ones that took longer going across the sky, leaving a trail behind them.

As the night wore on, tiredness took over for many of us and we set an alarm for 2AM and went to sleep. We lost two groups in the night: Peyman, Amit, Jeff and Richard who bailed first, and then Ryan, Mehran and Susan, who left at around 4AM. The remaining six (Debbie, Bac, Philip, Shauna, Rhonda and Brian) watched some more meteors, but mostly slept until the sun came up. The sunrise was also spectacular, starting with a pink glow over Calgary, and then finally the blood-red sun that shot up noticeably fast about 30 minutes after.

A faster hike down, collecting the glow sticks, and the magical, wonderous (and flippin' cold) night was over. We assumed that since we didn't hear any weak cries for help on the way down, that the glow sticks (and flashlights) did their jobs and all the early leavers made it down the mountain safely.

Don't miss out on next year's trip!

PS... I just have to say 'thanks' to my good friend, Karen, for suggesting this event. I would have never thought to do it on my own, and she suggested it for last year. I'm so glad we were finally able to do it!!
