This was one of my absolute favorite snow shoe days ever, if not one of my favorite days ever. The weather was perfect with mild temps and brilliant blue skies to complement the thick forest heavy with fresh snow. With Marko and his GPS along, we were able to easily find a good route on the hill, and did a loop, rather than an in-and-out, going up to the tip of Blueberry hill from the east side, paused for lunch at the picnic table at the end of the x-c ski trail, then down the west side ending up at the bank of Upper Kananaskis Lake where we popped onto the short x-c ski trail back to Elk Pass trailhead.

We got to experience first-hand what an unstable snow pack was like (without any actual avalanche danger) with about two feet of new heavy snow sitting on the rotten, hollow old snow of days gone by. The conditions made our trips up, and down, very challenging (if you don't believe me, ask Laurel and Garry), but in the end, everyone was a fantastic trouper, and in spite of my doubts, we all made it safely up, and then down, the challenge of our day, Blueberry Hill.

The air was pierced occasionally by none other than our newly dubbed "Wil Hung" (named, of course, for his singing, which in no way actually resembles the singing of William Hung of American Idol fame). At the pub after the event, we took more than a little joy in explaining, in politically correct terms, the natural double entrendre in the brilliant name to our Wil, who, being an English-Not-As-A-First-Language speaker did not immediately grasp the implied compliment being bestowed on him. And in fact, this was not the only new nickname handed out today. After... geez... um... YEARS... of successfully dodging a nickname of any sort, "Whiskey Jack" (former name "Marko") was casually dubbed by Jordin who pointed out "Whiskey Jack"'s penchant for accepting, sometimes even aggressively pursuing, leftovers and handouts from other hikers. Although "Wil Hung" and "Whiskey Jack" decided that Jordin must immediately be banished from their events, I personally decided that Jordin's presence was an absolute requirement on any and all of my future events so that we do not miss out on any potentially brilliant new nicknames.

A million, or more, sincere thanks to "Whiskey Jack" for his route finding efforts (as well as a few pull-the-flailing-snow-shoer-up-the-hill efforts) today, and of course to all the other heros of the day who lent hands, pulled up stuck or sliding snow shoers, dug out buried legs, gave push-ups from behind, built snowy stairs up the hill, and so on and so on. Teamwork at it's best. :)
